nities, Encouraging CompassionTopicsContinuous Support for RecoveryOur Group offers ongoing support for reconstruction efforts hoping thatcommunities can recover from disasters soonest possible.Support for Recovery from the 2011 Earthquakeand TsunamiFarmaers markets for FukushimaWith the theme of working together tosupport Fukushima, we sponsored farmersmarkets all across Japan in March 2017.The markets were aimed at reversing somenegative publicity for local products indisaster-struck areas by bringing productsin to sell to Group employees.Puppet shows: Smile CaravanIn collaboration with the Aichi Puppetry Center, weformed the Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Smile Caravan andin March 2012 we started performing puppet shows forresidents of temporary housing in Kamaishi City, IwatePrefecture, with the aim of cheering up children. As ofMarch 2017, we have performed the shows 10 times.At the end of the shows, volunteer employees distributehandmade presents and message cards, passing on thesentiments of employees unable to visit the region.Support for Recovery from the 2016 Kumamoto EarthquakesWe solicited donations from employees in the entire Group,making it possible to donate some 12 million yen to the CentralCommunity Chest of Japan and other organizations. We alsosold about 8,000 original-designt-shirts and handkerchiefs, and fromrevenues made a donation (about4.6 million yen) to a reconstructionsupport fund for culturalassets including AsoShrine, damaged in theearthquakes.14
